Why the cleave unto definition is important?
Did you know that according to Genesis 2:24, the cleave unto definition requires that a man leave his father and his mother for his wife? What a great dilemma for the new husband. The husband is required to sever their relationship with their father and mother for his new wife who in most cases he barely knows. The new husband has spent decades under his family and now he is supposed to relinquish those relationships for the sake of one new relationship with his wife.
Not only does the new husband relinquish the relationship with his parents, but if he has siblings, he must prioritize his wife over his siblings. Researchers report that siblings spend more time with each other than with anyone else. According to one study, by the time kids with siblings are 11 years old, they have spent roughly 33 percent of their free time with them. Even as they get older and have more outside interests and obligations, children still spend at least 10 hours a week with their brothers and sisters — in large families that number is more like 17 hours a week. The husband that cleaves unto his wife is leaving a life of values relationships with their parents and siblings. This can cause challenges and havoc in a marriage.
Husbands who make the decision to cleave unto their wives is following the Original Design of Marriage Outlined by the Holy Scriptures. According to Figure 1, the Original Design of Marriage has three primary components – Purpose, Path, and Partnership.
And the Lord God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it. And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die. And the Lord God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him (Genesis 2:15-18).
It is important for husbands to understand that the cleave unto definition is important because without it is almost impossible to have a Godly partnership with your wife as ordained by God.
God intended for the husband and wife to work together as a team.
One of the benefits of teamwork is marriage longevity. This couple has been married for 46 years and without teamwork they would have been divorced.
Another by product of a husband who cleaves to his wife is accomplishing the ministry that God has called the husband and wife to accomplish. God knows that your wife has every tool that is absent in you to ensure that the husband and wife accomplish those goals.
Let us take a closer look at the cleave unto definition. The word cleave in the Hebrew is dãbaq. It means to be united, hold fast, keep, cling to. A marriage ordained by God is completed when the husband becomes united with their wife. It becomes completed when the unification is transferred from the parents to the new husband and wife.
It is no surprise that many husbands and wives are challenged with this requirement. Most men and women today come from a single parent home. In 2019, there were about 15.76 million children living with a single mother in the United States, and about 3.23 million children living with a single father. With these types of statistics it is no surprise that men and women are challenged by the cleave unto definition.
