How should singles prepare for romantic love?
Romantic love has become the target for many singles who desire to get married. Marriage is a union that requires a form of preparation not normally discussed or found in many of our media sources. Singles must prepare for the highest level of love before they can expect to have an everlasting romantic love.
According to the article, The myth of romantic love may be ruining your health, romantic love in Western societies is often portrayed in a stereotypical way where two people search for each other to complete themselves. This notion has cause devastating results which are indicated by the present divorce rates. Many singles gravitate towards the virtual world of which entails online dating.
Online dating, flirtatious messaging and “sexting” are often used as an antidote to loneliness, lack of intimacy, and the painful experience of loss. “In cyberspace, [singles] can be whoever and whatever [they] desire to be. This gives [them] pleasure, but it seduces and lures [singles] into the imaginary: the world of the unconscious where desires we didn’t even know we had are immediately satisfied in the virtual world.
This can result in various emotional (stress, hopelessness, anger, pain) and behavioral reactions (fights, revenge porn, divorce, substance abuse, binge eating or not eating). The link between stress, a broken heart (love sickness), mental health (depression, obsessive compulsive disorder, insomnia) and physical health (exhaustion) is well documented. What is Agape love higher than romantic love?
The Greek word agape is often translated “love” in the New Testament. The essence of agape love is goodwill, benevolence, and willful delight in the object of love. Unlike our English word love, agape is not used in the New Testament to refer to romantic or sexual love. Nor does it refer to close friendship or brotherly love, for which the Greek word philia is used. Agape love involves faithfulness, commitment, and an act of the will. It is distinguished from the other types of love by its lofty moral nature and strong character. We are to love others with agape love, whether they are fellow believers (John 13:34) or bitter enemies (Matthew 5:44). We find three scriptures that direct husbands to agape love their wives (Colossians 3:19, Ephesians 5:25, Ephesians 5:28). The word agape in the Greek means to love from a moral and social perspective. For singles who are looking for a higher level of love than romantic love must learn the principles associated with implementing agape love.
How can singles apply agape love principles rather than romantic love?
Agape love is greater than romantic love because it requires a husband to love from a social and moral perspective. To love from a social perspective means to form cooperative and interdependent relationship with others. To love from a moral perspective means to conform to standards of what is right or just behavior.
Cooperative behavior requires working or acting together for a common purpose or benefit. An interdependent relationship is a close personal relationship between two people, where one or both provide some type of support and care for each other. Moral behavior involves conforming to standards of right or just behavior.
Single must learn to implement agape love before they seek romantic love. They can learn this process through their relationships with God. Singles who desire a higher love than romantic love must practice the tenants associated with agape love.
