Why couples should pray together?

Many successful marriages are inclusive of taking time out of their busy lives to pray together. The benefits of this communication apparatus are countless. Couples who pray together have an opportunity to avert the atrocities associated with divorce.

In it’s most basic form, prayer is “talking to God.” Prayer is not meditation or passive reflection; it is a direct conversation with God. It is the communication of the human soul with the Lord who created the soul. Prayer is the primary way for the believer in Jesus Christ to communicate his emotions and desires with God and to fellowship with God. Couples need to pray together so that they may express their emotions and desires to God as a team.

When a husband does not listen to his wife, she might not feel loved. She may feel frustrated, hurt, and rejected. The physiological pain associated with rejection triggers the same brain pathways that are activated when we experience physical pain. Prayer provides an opportunity for the husband and wife to learn to listen to each other.

Prayer is one of the best ways to help your family thrive. When you pray together, each member of the family learns what it means to be intimate with God. When you see answers to prayer, you experience His love and His presence in your daily lives.

Prayer is vital because it provides a practical demonstration of the importance of faith. Prayer strengthens the husband and wife’s connection with God therefore deepening the interpersonal relationship by encouraging each family member to become more sensitive to one another’s feelings.

Prayer is all about intimacy-with the Lord and with one another. The familiar, time-worn saying is true: families who pray together stay together. This is true because shared experiences of prayer quickly become opportunities to express mutual love, forgiveness, and grace. It is difficult to harbor grudges and cherish resentments when the husband and wife pray together. As an act of shared intimacy, prayer creates family cohesiveness and strengthens the bonds between husband and wife and all other family members.

Prayer can be audible or silent, private or public, formal or informal. However, for the husband and wife, prayer needs to be audible and private. For couples who have children there needs to be prayer time for the husband and wife and then prayer time for the entire family.

The first step in the process is to allocate a specific day and time for prayer. Once the couple has established this time do not change it. Next the couple needs to decide what will be the focus of their prayer time.

One great way to focus prayer time is to use a prayer list. A prayer list is a list of names or events that you are praying for. You should assemble the prayer list before prayer time starts. If you already know specific things you will be praying about, have this list pre-populated. Make sure that you and your spouse has a copy of the list. If you are praying for a specific person or event, make sure that each of you knows the important information to pray for. Allow the Lord to lead in the prayer time, but try to keep the focus on the main purpose for the prayer time.

In addition, keep a reminder of answered prayers. You and your spouse can keep a journal of the requests and when the prayers were answered. This can be visually represented in many ways. You can add a pebble to a glass jar each time a prayer is answered. Each request can be written on a separate paper or note card and have them in a file box or stack in a common meeting area. This will allow you and your spouse to read the request, when you started praying for it, when God answered the prayer which will help to validate the need for couples to pray together.
